EVALUATION

QUESTION 1
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms if conventions of real media texts?

I have picked 9 different shots from our video that stand out.

The first shot i have chosen is the shot with the back of our CD cover and the title, this is important as it it is showing the audience what the song and artist iss. We have chosen to put the back cover on as it identifys the cd.
I then chose the shot of florence appearing on screen, this introduces us into the video and sets the story.
I have chosen the scene of florences outfit as it shows the audience what she is wearing, this would appeal to the target audience (the girls) as they may wear a similar styled clothing terefore making them intrested in the video.
The next shot i chose was the paper hearts, this is a "fun" scene as the hearts build up and is something different to use in the video. It also is showing the mood in the video.
The balloon sceen adds fun, exitment and alot of colour into the video, I think that thiss is important as it brings the mood up and shows that the artist is fun and exiting.
I then chose the scene of florence dancing in London, this is important as it sets a scene and represents Britishness as he is a British artist.
The scene of florences lips was picked as this is lip scynced well and a few scences like this appear in the video.
The scene with the guard was one of the most popular scenes in the video shown from feedback that we got. It also adds fun and humour to the video.

In our video we set it in various locations; London, (Trafalgar square, Covent garden), In the boys bedroom, out side, inside. We chose to film some parts in London as the audience will immediatly know where the artist is and may draw people to our video if they are from London or like London. Indoor and out door locations were picked as we didnt want to just film in one place, we wanted varied locations to make it more exiting a sit may have got boring with just ussing one location or two.

When we decided on the person we wanted to play florence we had to think closly about costume as we wanted clothing to fit in with the genre of the music e.g. we didnt want her in joggers, trainers and hoodie as this outfit does not fit in with the genre of alternative rock/indie. We picked a girly dress kind of vintage styled jacket, it was quite unusual but this fits in with the research we did about florence and the Machine as she wears unusual clothing.

When editing our video we put a old vintage effect onto it, this relates to the genre and styling of the artist. This also went into the designing of the CD cover and advert. We also changed from scene to scene quite quickly as people would not get ored of looking at the same scene for a long period of time.

Our characters are introduced in the start of our video, We only have two characters in the video which is florence and the oy in the starting scene. Florence the main character is introduced appearing to be inside the television screen this is unusual and intresting from sseeing this in the first few moments of the video people know who the artist is and seeing how unusual the scene is it would maybe make people want to watch the rest of the video.

EVALUATION

QUESTION 2
What have you learned from your audience feedback?

The target audience for our video would be people who listen to florence and the machine and similar artists such as ...

Example of our audience..

name:eleanor
age:17
lives:harlow
music:kings of leon, florence and the machine, paloma faith
shop:topshop,h&m,vintage shops
place to go:london

This is what the artisit Florence and the machine looks like

We looked at many outfits and clothes that she has worn to get an ideo of what clothes we shsould dress our artist in when filming.
We chose a dress and a fur jacket, this is unusual like her style and vintage looking, like girly with a twist. This owuld appeal to our audience if they liked her style then it may encourage them to watch the video. so i think we acheived the overall feeling of the look.
We posted our video onto facebook and you tube. We got a few comments on facebook, but none really with helpful critisism only comments such as "good job" which would not help us in what we needed to improve on. Our teacher showed her friends and they gave us good comments which we could use and think about, a main point that was mentioned was that the setting of London had no rela relevance in the story, I can see why they thought this but we decided to film here to add locations which everyone woud know and could link to where the artist is from.
Also another point that was mentioned was the syncing of the lips and knocking on the screen at the very start of the video when florence is in the television was not that good, we had to time the knocking when we made the knocking noise as we had to film the scene then burn it onto a disc and play it whilst filming it and then put the knocking ound over it which we had to do a few times but this was alot better than our previous attempts.
The feedback that we got from our teachers friends helped us in evaluationg our workk whereas comments on face book did not help very much. Also we didnt get that many comments so a problem with this is that is may be unrealiable, so it better to ask people directly to comment, that is what i have learnt when managing feed back.

QUESTION 3
We all have created a advert and a CD cover, Here they are….

Here is Katies CD cover and advert.

The advert the picture in the advert gives a sense of fun and exitement about the artist and song, this feeling is acheived from the pose she is pulling and the smile on her face. As the artist is looking straight forward it gives people the feeling that the advert is only talking to them. The colour used fit in with the genre and feeling of the video.
The CD cover is eye catching, and the way that the image is used three times draw your attention and is eye catching.

Here is Emmas CD cover and advert.
The CD cover: The title of the song "A Kiss with a Fist" is multi coloured, this is showing that the song is fun and exiting, and full of colour, the image has been edited to give an effect related to the genre.
The advert is relating again to the video by the heart and the title and informwtion needed is clear to read. The same images is ued on both the CD cover and advert linking them both together.

Here are my cd cover and advert.
The CD cover relate to the video by the television and the heart, the title and name of the artist again is clearly visable. The advert is eye catching and unusual, which would attract our audience, again there is a heart on it linking to the video.

We have all marketed our CD covers and Adverts in the same way, they all have the same information which is needed, the same style text and font.

The strengths of our marketing are that they are all eye catching, I think that if they were in a music shop on the shelves they would stand out, they appeal to our audience, it is clear who the artist is as there is a clear picture of her on the cover and also who the artist and what the name of the song is.

There are some weaknesses in our packaging and this is that although we have similar aspects in our packaging that is the same maybe there is not enough similarity in the images used to show that they are all advertising the same product.

The pricing of our single is not on our adverts/cd covers, but the price of the single would be £2.99. This is the average price of singles. We have looked at Florence and the machine singles and most are £2.99 so this would be a good price for it to be.

If the product was launghed it would be advertised in magazine such as NME as our target audience read this magazine as it advertises the same style of music as Florence and the Machine. Our video would be shown on music channels such as kerrang! Also on radio stations particularly NME radio.
We have used direct mrketing in our tasks from the way we have presented our cd cover and advert from the style they are. a it is alternative rock genre it will appeal to peple who like this type of musci straight away.

For direct marketing people who are part of Florence and the Machines fan page could receive direct marketing, they would be the first to receive the latest adverts/cd covers and the single, this may be an idea as then they would tell their friends who tell their friends etc. Also our adverts could be blown up and be put on sides of bus stops etc. this would be good advertising as many people (not even our target audience) would see it and may be influenced into buying it.

Our advertisement would be placed in the appropriet place, it would be in magazine such as NME, this is appropriet as our target audience read NME therefore seeing our advert. Also NME is a very popular magazine, so our adverts would be seen by many.
I would have to go to NME and talk size and location in the magazine to get a cost for the advert as specific sizes and locations may be more expensive than others e.g a bigger sized advert would be more expensive than a smaller one. People would gain information about the genre (alternative rock) from NME.
A single would be hyped up as much as possible to get people exited therefore acheiving more sales. Our single "A Kiss with a Fist" would be released on the 25th March this would be advertised around 2 weeks before the single was releaed as a CD and avalible to download on itunes, the reason for this is that people wont get bored of waiting e.g if it was like a month before people would forget about the adverts and poster and may become bored with it all, but two weeks is enough time for people to generate enough hype and get exited it would make people aware of the single. also two weeks gives enough time for people to save money to buy it.
A CD cover requires the name of the artisit which is clearly visable, the title of the song, the artist name should be clearly visible, the title should be distinguishable from the artists name and the genre of music should be hinted by the cover art. The sizes of the cd covers are 4.724x4.724.
I feel as we have acheived this as a group as both the title of the song and the name of the artist is clear and readable on screen. Our cd covers would be the size above.
Adverts need to convince poeple to buying the product that it is advertising, it needs to be clear on what it is advertising also. Adverts can be many different sizes depending on where they are.
As a group we have done this ass we have used opinions which would convince people into buying our CD e.g *****- Q, people that read Q would be intrested in the single as Q are giving a good review.

QUESTION 4

How did you use new technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

For this coursework we have used new technologies in the research, planning and evaluation stages we have used a various things such as ...

We used google to reearch our artist and all relative information that we needed to know to help us.

Obviously a camera was used when filming. When doing this i learnt that when tracking it is important to keep the camera as steady as possible in the scene in our video where the camera is tracking florences feet this had to be filmed a few times as my hands were a bit shakey. Also making sure that all the shots were in the right setting.

We used Photoshop in our CD cover and advert tasks. It is quite complicated and takes a while to get used to it. I used many different tools like the lassomagnetic tool and the contrasting colour and contrast.

We posted our video onto you tube and facebook for feedback.

I movie was used for editing our video. It takes time again to get used too like photoshop, I learnt how to add effects in the video we put a vintage style effect on our video, this added to the genre of the music.

Finally prezi was used to present our evaluations. I have never used this before but found it quite easy to work, I learnt with this how to use it and add pictures and text.

Evaluation

Now our video, CD cover and Advert are done me and my group now have to do an evaluation.
Here are the questions that need to be answered...

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media texts?

2. What have you learned from your audience feedback?

3. How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

4. How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Wednesday, 24 March 2010

I have created my CD cover for Florence and the Machines Kiss with a Fist. Me and my group took several photographs of our main singer in various posistions and using different poses. I choose the one where she is jumping. I then used Photoshop and edited it, this took quite some time to do. I made the image of "Florence" jumping look old by the effectt on it and the adjusted brightness and contrast, so it relates to the overall look of the video. Then i thought i would want my cd cover to stand out so i then drew hearts behind her using all different shades of pinks and reds. I did think that this may look a bit like a pop cover but i think that the idea of whats behind it, the shot of "Florence" and the text dont represent pop at all. I made the heart look hand drawn on and "messy" to make it unusual and exiting It relates to the video with the shots of the paper hearts. I put a TV screen in the background to again relate. The CD cover then relates to the video which is important and links it all together.
Here is my final CD front cover.

Me and my group want all of our CD cover and adverts to in some way match and link together so we decided to use the same font and have the same image on our back cover. They do not look the same but elements of them are so people would be able to tell that they were for the same thing.
here is my final CD back cover.

I have created a advert for Florence and the Machine - Kiss with a Fist, to be displayed in NME to advertise the artist and to get people to buy the song. I have again used photoshop to do this. I have used similar elements in my advert to my CD cover, this was to link the two together. I edited the images so that they appear old, like old photography paper, this is similar to the overall look in the video. My advert looks like a face a i have divided the page so it goes eyes, information, mouth. I feel that it is more effectivethat the eye are looking away, not to the center. I feel that it seems "fun". I have put reviews on there tis then persuades people to listen and therefore buy the CD as many other people like it, and if you like NME and KERRANG! (which i have used) then you would be more inclinded to get the CD. I put the CD front cover on the advert so that people will know what it looks like if they want to buy it. I am pleased with how it looks.

Here is my Advert

Tuesday, 23 March 2010

I am using adobe photohop to create my CD cover,
I wanted the CD cover to link into the video, so I chose the start of the music video where the artist is on the TV screen, this is a memorable scene so looking at the video then the CD cover you would know why the artist is jumping from a TV screen. I got the image of a TV screen from google images i saved this and then edited it to make it look"old fashioned", I then made the TV screen all one colour using the paint bucket "fill" tool icon. I then cut around the image of Emma jumping using the lasso tool I then used the brush to draw a heart around her, this relate to the music video (the paper hearts) and it links with the overall story of the video. This alo makes it bright and different, therefore it would stand out on a shelf. I then added the artists name and the title. I made sure this was clear and readable. My group and my self all agreed to use this font so that they all link together.

I created a CD cover and advert, but then decided against them, I took the ideas from them and created my final perlimenary tasks, here they are.

MUSIC VIDEO - KISS WITH A FIST

Here is the final and finished product for our music video Kiss with a fist by Florence and the Machine.

Monday, 22 March 2010

We have finished editing now and our video is finished, It took quite a while to edit, We played around with the editing to see what looked best, all three of us in our group are pleased with it. Our course work has worked well because as a group we have all got on well as a group.

I am now going to start making my CD cover. I chose this photo of Emma(our artist) for my CD cover as i think it intresting and fun. Althought the image i have chosen isnt similar to my original plan i think it works well. I will now edit this to make it into a CD cover

Thursday, 18 March 2010

We have just finished editing the lip syncing part in our video, it wa going well to start with but then it got a it difficult to match so we had to film some parts again to fit in better with the song. Without realising some parts we didnt intend to put in our video look better than the parts which we intended too, We have had to cut some scenes down as they were too long and the audience would get bored so we added more. It was quite hard to fit everything into the video, we had a lot of footage we wanted to use but not enough time to put it in. We dont have much more to edit and we are pleased with what we have got so far.

Thursday, 11 March 2010

We have now finished filming for our video, As a group we are pleased with what we have filmed and the time that it ha taken to film, i think ecause we had it all planned and organised what we was going to do that it has worked so well.
We are now editing. we started to edit before we finished filming so that we didnt have to rush allour editing. In our group Emma has a mac so we didnt have to rely on using the schools when they were free and we could do it in our own time, which we did. It was alot easier like this. We have enough footage and much more than we need to create our video. We are using Imovie to edit. As a group we have thought and talked about the editing both as we have filmed the video and now we are editing. This has been useful as we have an idea of what we are doing so we dont just rush it and not think about what we are doing properly.

We have sped up a few scenes, we filmed a scene where it appears that a heart made up of little paper hearts is growing, this we had to speed up otherwise it would have taken too much time in our video.

#3 Filming

Today we filmed more for our music video, There was a range of shots used. High angle, Low angle close ups, long shots. mid shots, from above etc. we dont want our video to only use one type of shot we want a range of shots to make it more intresting to look at.

We filmed some instrumental part today using a guitar. We have finished most of our filming now, only have a little bit left to do. We also talked about the editing and effects that we want to put into the video.

#2 Filming

We have just filmed a scence which will go in the start of the music video. We had to film our singer then burn it onto a disc, we wanted it to look like the singer was on the t.v singing, we then played this on the dvd player, it looks good and is more intresting to watch as it is unusual. this scence sets the story for our video.
The story behind our video is that Florence is being ignored bu her boyfriend, he is playing the x box and she rings, he ignores her call. After this his TV screen goes blank then Florence appears and starts singing Kiss with a Fist. This song is then related to her feelings towards him.

Monday, 8 March 2010

#1 Filming

Today we filmed more for our music video, We filmed alot of miming which we will then lip sync to the music, This took quite a while to get the timing right, we ussed both close ups and medium shots, we shot alot of footage incae we need more when editing. We also filmed a few scenes with alot of balloons in the shot, we wanted them flying around, to make the shot fun and exiting, this wass quite difficult and took some time to get right but in the end it came out in the way which me and my group wanted it too.

Sunday, 28 February 2010

This is the current front cover for Florence and then Machine, I have planned my own CD front cover, by looking at the current cover i can take ideas from it. Also from this i know what is important to put on the cover for example the name of the artist and the name of the album/single, This cover is eyecatching and the colours used are nice and eyecatching. This may be something i want to think about when designing my own cover. I have looked at different genres such as pop and rock and their front covers to establish what not to put onto the cover. e.g. if it would not look right of fit in well in my cover. I will either take photos when filming for the front cover or use still shots from the video when its finished. I know what type of shot i want and excatly what i would like in my cd cover.

Here is my plan

I also have designed my advert. I have looked at adverts for artists and looked at advertisements sfor artists in NME
Here is my plan

I have looked at other adverts for bands and singers to see what they have put in their adverts. I have also researched and thought about what draws people into advertisements.

The first things I notice is that the covers are not at all boring, the artists name is clear and there is an image of the artists on the front cover.I will use the information i have gathered when I design and make my cd cover.

Tuesday, 23 February 2010

Filming Location: London

Today we went to London to film some scenes for out music video, we shot many different types of shots, close ups, mid shots, long shots, tracking etc. We filmed in Traflagaur Square and also in covent garden, filming went well and according to plan, we shot all of what we intended to shoot, followed our plan and we did shoot a few bits that were not intended but they work, we filmed a lot of footage so that when we come to edit out music video we will have more footage to play with and edit into our video.

As Florence and the Machine is a popular British artist the location of London for some cenes in our video represents Britishness and is patriotic. We shot a scene of our singer dancing with a queens guard which adds fun to our video. We wanted our video to seem fun and exiting.

Friday, 12 February 2010

Thursday, 11 February 2010

We have also decided that we will use a member of our group to be the artist in our video. This is good because as a group we can organise when to film etc. and we will not need to rely on other people as sometimes like previous tasks have proven that this does not alwayss work out. We will need to select the right clothing, make up etc. to acheive to acheive the overall look which we want to fit the MES and genre of the song. Here is what the artist looks like of Florence and the Machine...

Wednesday, 10 February 2010

We looked at music magazines of different genres to help us in our production tasks of creating a cd cover and advert, we looked at NME and Top of the Pops both very different, we did this to see what type of magazine would be best to advetise our music video, and I think the best maazine to suit this would be NME as it has bands and singers of the same genre as Florence and the Machine. If we advertised Florence and the Machine in Top of the Pops it may not be very successful as the type of music advertised in there is very different to those in NME. Top of the Pops show very "cheesy", and maybe obvious singers such as JLS and other boy pop bands like them.

Monday, 8 February 2010

We have made this mind map for our ideas, we also have got a book in which we have all our planning and work in, which will help us when we are filming.

Sunday, 7 February 2010

We have planned all of our music video we have decided on the locations, costumes, types of shots, props, what is going into each shot. We have also decided on who will be in the videi. we have created a story board and a mind map so our group is well prepared to create the music video.

Sunday, 10 January 2010

A2 Media

For my A2 Media coursework I will be creating a music video. I will be working in a group (with Emma and Katie) We need to make a final decision about what song we are going to choose. We decided that it would not be a good idea to choose a well known song as the ideas for the video will be in our heads and we wont be able to think about any new ideas, Also to choose a slower paced song as it will be easier to lip sync. We want a song which has a story to it, so we can link the lyrics to the video.

I will need to create a promo package for the release of a album, to include a music promo video, together with 2 of 3 options:

  • a website homepage for the band
  • a cover
  • a magazine advert

We have looked at other peoples music vidoes that have been made to see what kind of ideas they had.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ts5lCUXE6_g&feature=related - this one was goo the way the screen has been split, and it all links and the genre is shown in the music video which is clever.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AHLAtJse_5k&feature=related - I thought that this A2 Media coursework was really good. there was a story to the video and it matched the lyrics, there was many different types of shots and many different ideas went into this.

We have created a mind map which will help us in planning and choosing a song for our coursework, on it we have written all of our ideas so far...

We have decided on the song A Kiss With A Fist by Florence and the Machine.

This song is alternative/ indie genre. Although it seems a fast song the lyrics are not fast its just the tune which is fast paced. It gives us alot of thought for our video. A idea which we have got is to film in two different settings, one at a party and the toher in London, these are exiting and give us alot of room for ideas.

we have looked at the video on youtube and im am going to look in detail at the lyrics and then see what we can put in our video which will relate to them.

Here are the lyrics to A Kiss With A Fist...http://www.songmeanings.net/songs/view/3530822107858724512/
