Rape awarness PSA

This week in media we had to create a film about rape awareness, We worked in groups, we first had to plan what we was going to film on storyboards, We all had to think about misce-en-scene, location, and if there was any shadows or reflections (like in the previous film), We used a range of techniques on the camcorder when filming and used a variety of shots in the production.

One type of filming process we used was Tracking, This was quite a difficult scene to shoot as I had to run with the camcorder and try to be as steady as I could be. However when we edit this we can change it to make it look steady. we still need to edit and add text etc. into the PSA.

The research that I did before hand has helped me in planning and also I will need to research facts and figures which will be added in at the end of our film.

By making this films it is helping me practise for my final peice of coursework and is helping me in using equiptment such as camcorders and Mac's to edit with.

So I would give this peice of work a level 2 according to the sheet we have as the film shows that the shots were steady, however the last shot was not as steady as we had hoped as it was a difficult scene to film, framing a shot, various shot differences, the appropriet material was used, also appropriet mise-en-scene,suitable editing as we added useful text and facts, use of sound within the editing process; we choose to have no sound in our film as it was more effective. and am pleased with the end result.

Public Service Announcement (PSA)

In the next few lesson I will be creating a PSA for rape awareness. I am going to research all different types of PSA using the internet to see what i find and if i can gather any ideas for the film which I will be creating.

This in a PSA about cleaning up New York.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSWv90msTUc
This is a PSA on smoking.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWFwotSD6X4
This is a PSA on road saftey.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3hplRpOdOXE
This is PSA for speed limits
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cvja-PA5Egc&NR=1

These all use various techniques to make you notice them, some use shocking images which are emotive such as the PSA for speed limits. Others use a softer approach such as catchy music to help people remember and animation ( such as the hedgehog advert) It will appeal to children who it is aimed at.

The Phone Call

In the last few lesssons in Media we have had to plan, create and edit a short film called The Phone Call. we had planning sheets, to prepare us for filming, i found these helpfull as they prepared me for what I would be doing in the following lessons.

We used a camcorder to film, this is new equiptment to use, i have learnt how to use a camcorder better, and i have noticed how much needs to be thought about when filming, such as there needs to be no shadows in the background of things such as windows, mirrors etc. the setting is appropriet and there isnt any unwanted objects in a shot.

After the group had filmed the group edited it on a Mac, and i think that the end result has come out well for a first attempt. There is use of music and titles which improved the production.

Looking at how other groups filmed was helpful also to get any ideas that will help me in creating my coursework.

So I would give this peice of work a level 2 - 3 according to the sheet we have as the film shows that the shots were steady, framing a shot, various shot differences, appropriet material used, also appropriet mise en scene, suitable editing, use of sound within the editing process.

A2 - Film/Television/Video

For this year in Media Studies I will be creating either;

  • a music video
  • a short film
  • a film trailer

I looked at some groups attempts in creating their group film for St. Marks. While watching this I looked at how steady the camera was when filming a shot, How the shot was framed, like if there was too much space or if the people in the shot had the top of their heads cut off, the use of shot distances and different shots such as panning, close up, long shot etc. And if the misce-en-scene was appropriate, like if there was any unwanted objects in the shot.

All these facts will have to be thought about when I make either a music video, a short film, or a film trailer.

As i will be working with one other person (Emma) i will need to show what I have done, and we will need to do equal amounts of work and show this to achieve a high marks.

I will need to practice holding a shot steady, thinking about misce- en- scene, practice framing a shot, and thinking about what shot distances I would want in the production. Also we will need to decide what one out of the three choices we will want to create.

Question 1 (slides 2,3 and 4)

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

For my music magazine I chose the genre of Pop.
I looked at Top of the pops magazine and Smash hits magazine. I did this to help me decide what information and types of stories that I would put into my music magazine. I saw that the writing was informal and there was language used to suit the audience. e.g. by using words like "lol" and "omg" this would attract people to the magazine. So I decided to use it in my own magazine.

There is lots of text in Pop magazines, The stories on the front are about celebrities. There are many stories showing on the front cover this would make people want to read about it inside the magazine. The colour theme that I used was pink and yellow this is similar to the magazine on my slide, it uses the colour theme of yellow, pink and blue. These colours appeal to the target audience of young teenage girls (age 12 - 16) as they are quite girly colours and they are also bright, making the magazine stand out from many others.

Looking at Top of the Pops magazine and my magazine, it shows that I have used
forms and conventions of real media products.

Question 2 (slide 5)

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Photobucket

My music magazine represents teenage girls, aged 12 - 16. This is the target audience for my magazine. I have shown this by using;

  • Bright colours
  • Girly colours (pink and yellow)
  • Celebrity news
  • Free gifts
  • Informal language

All these points would represent a social group of teenage girls.

Question 3 (slide 6)

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Photobucket

Bauer Media don’t have many pop publications so my magazine would be aiming at a market that hasn’t been hit yet. Bauer Media could expand my pop magazine to other forms of media such as online, radio and TV, and also could expand it to different countries making it a world wide magazine. Bauer media is very successful, they own many publications such as;
  • Kiss FM
  • Magic FM
  • FHM ( best selling international, multi platform brand)
  • The Box
  • Closer
  • Heat
  • Grazia
  • Q
  • Kerrang!
  • Zoo
  • 4 Music
  • Zoo
  • Smash Hits

So it is a reliable company to go with. This is why I would go with this company.

There are some negatives about going with Bauer Media. As Bauer Media owns many successful companys there would be alot of competition with other magazines. Because Bauer Media is very successful they may charge me a high price if I go with them. But overall I think Bauer Media is a good choice.

Question 4 (slide 7)

Who would be the audience for your media product?
Photobucket

The target audience for my music magazine is teenage girls aged 12 - 16.

Readers Profile
My audience would typically be a 14 year old girl called Emma who is just starting year 9. She has exams coming up and is stressed, shes intrested in celebrity news and gossip, she loves boy/girl bands and she likes clothes and to see what celebrities are wearing. She reads the magazine to take a break from revising. From the Uses and Gratifications Theory my target audience would read the magazine for all four reasons; escapism, Personal Idenity, Personal relationships and survelliance.

Question 5 (slide 8)

How did you attract/ address your audience?
Photobucket

I attracted/ addressed my target audience by using bright colours, informal language, lots of text, intresting stories and free gifts. All these reasons would make the target audience want to buy this magazine.

Question 6 (slide 9)

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Photobucket

I have learnt alot form creating my magazine, I have learnt how to use Photoshop, I did find it quite difficult and hard to use. I learnt how to edit photos correctly and add all different types of effects to a photograph. Also have learnt how to make a blog, and post images onto it. I did find this hard to start with.
Here one skill that i learnt
Photobucket
this is what the image looked like after
Photobucket
The brightness and contrast have been edited, I then used other various tools to improve this image.

Question 7 (slide 10)

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
Photobucket

I learnt what not to do and what to do on my final music magazine from my perliminary task. I learnt not to make one picture be all what is on the page. In my preliminary task I only had one picture and a small amount of text. I learnt that this looked too empty and it was not that intresting, Also the text blended into the picture. The headline and name of magazine did not stand out at all, so in my final magazine I made sure that everything was bright and stood out, and there was lots on the page.
My preliminary contents page did not have alot on it, I added lots of text and images onto my final magazine. So I did learn alot from creating my perliminary task.

Bauer Media and IPC Media

Friday 27th March

Photobucket

Today I looked at Bauer Media (http://www.bauermedia.co.uk/ ) and IPC Media (http://www.ipcmedia.com/), from these two groups I will decide what one would be most appropriate for my music magazine, from looking at them both I have decided that Bauer Media would be more suitable for my magazine. My reasons for this are that they dont have alot of pop publications so there is an opportunity there for my magazine, The publishing group would expand my magazine through to TV, online and radio, as they encourage this in many of their magazines.

Bauer Media is reliable, they own so much; they have 230 magazines in 15 countries. So they could make my magazine international.

I have also planned my evaluation questions.

Images for my magazine

Photobucket

I took this photograph for my double page spread. I will edit this image to make it look professional.

What works well
In this picture there are many thing what work well; Firstly the person in this photo is looking directly at the camera therefore catching the readers attention and engaging the reader making the reader feel involved.

The genre is pop, and there is a big smile on the persons face, which is typical of images in pop magazines. Also she is wearing bright colours attracting readers and the colour pink, which is a typical girly colour, and the target audience for my magazine is young teenage girls so it relates to the target audience also.

What doesn't work well
There are a few things which dont work so well with this image. The location is not suitable for taking this picture as in the background of the image there is too much going on so this will need to be edited out.

Overall i think this is a successful image for my magazine double page spread.

Top of the Pops

I was looking at another Top of the Pops magazine front cover, using the internet and i found key facts about the pop magazine; i learnt that the majority of readers are girls; 87% girls, to 13% boys, this would have a big affect what was in the magazine, dedicating more of the content to interest girls, i will take this information in mind when creating my magazine.
The price of Top of the Pops magazine is £2.85, i may price my magazine cheaper to appeal to a wider audience.
This is very helpful to me as my music magazine is pop, the same genre as my magazine.
Photobucket

Here is the link to the website where i got this from:

Photobucket src="http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z61/lizziebeth_05/media%20studies/th_otpt.jpg" border=0>

By looking at front covers such as this it gives me ideas to start forming my front cover. This example looks typically like a pop magazine by the colours used pinks and purples, the sparkles, bright pink and yellow gives it a girly feel. and this appeals to its target audience( teenage girls), the main story is on High School Musical which is targeted at many people, there are alot of images on the front and lots of writing making it look busy and exiting so i will try and put alot of these features onto my magazine. This magazine would be read for all Escapism, Personal relationships ( this is shown by the headline"Your a star" making the reader feel on a one to one basis), Personal Identity( there is advice on clothes on the front page "A list glam. 56 hot buys" this is creating an identity by copying a celebrity image) and surveillance.
The stories would interest young girls as they are about celebrities or are interesting or shocking (body shock).
This magazine shows the genre of pop very well, and will help me create my magazine.
I have decided that i am going to do my genre of my music magazine as pop. I will need to research pop magazines such as top of the pops to help me in creating my magazine. I have written and plan and have written a readers profile for my magazine, and have also drawn a mock up of my front cover, contents page and double page spread. I have looked at Uses and Gratifications theory, i found this helpful to figure out why the target reader would read my music magazine and what the reader looks for.

Preliminary Task

I created my Preliminary task of a front cover and a contents page for students using Photoshop and from photos which i have taken myself. From doing this i believe that it will help me with my music magazine coursework, from getting feedback and realising what i did wrong it will help me to not make those type of mistakes in my music magazine.

Here is my Preliminary task:

Mock Up

This is my mock up for my preliminary magazine. I did this in class in groups. This planning helped me decide what type of information that I wanted on my front cover, the layout and the title. Also it made people share their own thoughts and ideas.

NME magazine

I have looked at NME magazine, I have looked both at the online and print version. The colour theme runs throughout both print and online, purple background with a border, the title of the magazine is made clear; red and in capitals this makes it look important, and clear to see. This is the same online and in the magazine.

There are more stories online rather than print as there are more links to other websites, and online is important because of interactivity, this would appeal to a wider audience and a more younger audience. Also online NME more people can access as it is free and easy to access.

kerrang! magazine

I have looked at the magazine Kerrang!, The front page has a band on the front; this tells us the main topic within the magazine. The people are looking face on at you. this attracts the reader and catches your attention.
within the magazine there are lots of advertisements, such as x box games, HMV adverts, cds, adverts for the army and many more; this is where the magazine gets its money from.
At first the writing on each page looks scattered and un-organised, but then if you look closer all the text is neatly in boxes and is organised.
The target audience would be for older teenagers and adults (15+),as the language within the magazine is offensive (swearing), and also there is alot of text on each page, therefore There's too much to read and would loose a younger audiences interest quickly.
The colour theme on each page is white writing on a black background.

Stewards Schools Newsletter.

I am going to look at Stewards School Newsletter magazine, i will be looking analysing the content, layout, and the audience.

On the font page there is a letter from the headteacher, and survey results from year 11 parents, this would involve parents and make the magazine interesting to them.
Inside the magazine there is news about school meals, contacting Stewards, charity news news for parents-this type of news would be the news that parents read.
There is news for students inside, opinions from students, important dates and events coming up, competitions, also there are what past pupils have done. There are many pictures and photographs which would make the magazine more appealing to students. The language used is a mixture, news for parents is written more formally compared to the news for students.

There is the logo for Stewards school on the front page. There are borders around each story, and each story has a heading.

The audience is for both students in years 7 - 11 (age 11-16 year olds), and adults, the type of news varies to appeal to all types of audiences.

The Stewards website is http://www.stewardsschool.co.uk/
I looked at the issue from Christmas 2008.

The Sheaf

Photobucket src="http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z61/lizziebeth_05/thesheaf.jpg" border=0>
I looked at The Sheaf which is a students newspaper for the university of Saskatchewan.
This will help me to create my own st.marks magazine as i looked at;

The funding.
The Sheaf is a student run, non - profit organization. It is funded from U of S students in the form of a direct levy, and through advertising. The financial affairs are governed by a Board of Directors. there are nine member, eight of them are students.

The distribution.
The Sheaf is published weekly throughout the academic year. Papers are distributed to colleges on campus.

The purpose.
The purpose is to inform and entertain. It is heavy on entertainment value and news that is relevant to the students. The Sheaf is a place to discuss issues. It is written by students - for students.

The content.
It is divided into two sections; Section A and Section B. News and opinions- Section A, this is filled with news stories, letters, features, opinions and classified advertisements. and Section B looks at the social life in and around campus which is filled with band interviews, CD reviews, plays etc.

The policy.
The managing editors will decide if the article or artwork is suitable, if it isn't they can remove it.
